There’s always that one animal who shifts your entire world the moment they arrive. For me, it was Sally Kitten. I heard her crying at my window one night, and in that instant, I knew she belonged in my life.

A year later, she’s a thriving indoor‑outdoor cat. Bright‑eyed, adventurous, and always ready to come when called. She had welcomed her first round of 4 kittens.

One night while I was away with friends, my mother and Sally were home together. As she slept, Sally suddenly began shouting. She was loud, urgent, determined to wake my mother. It wasn’t typical cat noise; it was a warning, a call, something that pulled her out of sleep instantly.

Half-asleep, my mother checked on Sally and noticed smoke. She thought it was her heater, so she turned it off, then turned on a fan and opened the bedroom door. In that moment, my mother noticed the fire in the living room, so she immediately went to the bathroom, opened the window, and started yelling for help. The neighbors heard her and called for help.

When the firemen arrived, they were shocked to find her in there. The house we were in was previously vacant for at least 5 years. When they got her out, they immediately put her into an ambulance and started to give her oxygen. They immediately headed to the hospital; they told her that if she had stayed in that house for five minutes longer, then she would have lost her life. My mother left the hospital and went to her parents’ house.

The next day, my mother and grandparents went to check on the house. The whole left side of the property was gone, including the carport and that side of the house. When the fire marshal arrived, they told her that they found 2 cats that had sadly been lost to the fire. My mother was so worried that one of them was Sally. She then called for her, and there she came, walking up as if nothing had happened. As my mother went through the stuff, they saw Sally use the restroom in the ashes. I think that truly shows how she felt about the house.

When Sally and my mother got into a new home, they were much happier and were able to rebuild their lives. Sadly, 2 years later we would lose Sally to cancer, but we do truly believe Sally was brought into our lives to save my mother.

My family and I will always celebrate this wonderful cat’s life every National Cat Day. I truly hope you enjoyed this little story, and don’t forget to treat the cats in your life to little extra fun today.
