Before the Web, the world was slower. Then one invention flipped the switch and launched us into the digital age. World Wide Web Day is our chance to honor the technology that turned information into instant access and connection. <\/span>At Straight Shot Wireless, we think it deserves more fanfare than it gets. After all, without the Web, we wouldn\u2019t have a business and wouldn\u2019t be reading this now. <\/span>So sit back and let\u2019s take a quick trip back to where it all started.<\/span><\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t the Internet and the Web the same thing?<\/span><\/h6>\n

Nope! You are definitely not alone if you’ve been using the terms interchangeably. Most people do. <\/span>The internet is the infrastructure itself: a global network of cables, data centers, satellites, towers, and wireless networks (that\u2019s where we step in) that connect computers around the world.<\/span>The World Wide Web is what runs on top of that infrastructure. So that would be the links, images, and just about any content you access through a browser. <\/span>Think of the internet as the highway system, and the web as the cars, billboards, and rest stops you actually interact with while driving.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Origin Story<\/span><\/h6>\n

In 1989, a British computer scientist named Tim Berners-Lee was working at CERN, the European particle physics lab in Switzerland. He was frustrated that researchers did not have an easy way to share information across different computers, so he built a hypertext system that would let anyone link documents together, regardless of which machine they used. <\/span>By 1990, working alongside engineer Robert Cilliau, Berners-Lee had built the core pieces we still use today:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • HTML<\/span><\/strong> (HyperText Markup Language): How the web pages are structured.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • HTTP<\/strong> <\/span>(HyperText Transfer Protocol): How the data moves between servers.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The first web browser and server: <\/span><\/strong>The Browser was called WorldWideWeb, and the server was called info.cern.ch<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Once the web stepped beyond just sending researchers\u2019 findings and made it for the public in the early 90s, that’s when things truly started to take off. In 1993, there would be 50 servers online. By October, there would be over 500 sites, then sites like Yahoo! started popping up and the Web\u2019s wild growth officially kicked off.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Why a WISP<\/span> Cares About Web Day<\/span><\/h6>\n

    The web doesn’t mean much without a way to actually get online. That’s where companies like us come in. <\/span>Every time a rancher outside Roswell pulls up a weather radar, a student streams a lecture, or a family video calls their grandkids, that\u2019s the Web and the network working together. One invented the destination. The other builds the road to get there <\/span>We take a lot of pride in bringing reliable wireless internet to areas that always get the attention of the big providers. World Wide Web Day is as much a celebration of connection as it is code. Connecting our neighbors is exactly why we exist.<\/span><\/p>\n
