Every year on the first Monday in September, we pause for a long weekend, fire up the grill, and enjoy the last taste of summer. But behind the cookouts and the day off lies a story that deserves to be remembered, one about ordinary people who believed their work and their well-being mattered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Strike That Changed Everything<\/span><\/h6>\n

George Pullman built a company town outside Chicago and controlled nearly everything in it: homes, shops, water, gas, with rent pulled straight from workers’ paychecks. When the depression of 1893 hit, he cut a third of his workforce and slashed wages by 25 percent, but left the rent untouched. <\/span>Workers had enough. On May 11, 1894, they walked off the job. The American Railway Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, joined a nationwide boycott of Pullman cars, which stalled rail traffic across much of the country. When Federal troops stepped in, and the strike became one of the largest labor conflicts in American history.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Labor Day Became a Federal Holiday<\/span><\/h6>\n

With the country watching, Congress and President Grover Cleveland moved fast to smooth things over with the labor movement. On June 28, 1894, just days before troops intervened in the strike, Cleveland signed Labor Day into law as a national holiday. The day off we enjoy today exists because workers stood their ground.<\/span><\/p>\n
